WEIGHT TRAINING: HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH

As a Fort Lauderdale personal trainer who has been practicing his art since 1989, I think I can be regarded as an authority as to how much weight training is the optimal amount. Now I made my bones in this business as a champion bodybuilder who won quite a few physique contests. I actually at the beginning of my career as someone who works out, really had a problem getting results from the weight training programs I copied from champion bodybuilders out of the magazines. I tried all of the great champions routines and none of their routines did anything but radically wear me out and if anything these long laborious workouts made me lose muscle mass rather than accomplish my desire: which was to increase muscle mass, strength, and physical endurance. Me being a rather stubborn fellow, a personality trait most who know me would say has endured right up to my present middle age status, I was not about to give up just because I had not accomplished my goal quickly and easily. The more difficulty I encountered in accomplishing my goals the more hell bent I became on overcoming my difficulties and attaining my goals. I adopted a mind set in which I would go to any length no matter how difficult to attain the physique of my dreams, nothing was going to stop me.

I read every book available on weight training, I tried every extreme philosophy. One time I did fifty sets of barbell curls because of dissatisfaction I had with my arm development. From one workout my arms grew ½ of an inch, I had actually got better results than the guy who wrote the article on intensity or insanity training, a workout system advocated by an old school bodybuilder who would do fifty to seventy five sets of high intensity exercise for all of his body-parts or so he claimed. Bodybuilders being ego driven individuals to the highest extreme, often exaggerate their actual workouts and do not thus report what they do accurately and honestly to others.

Through all the study and experimentation I had been doing with exercise and nutrition on myself I finally found the main reason why I wasn’t making gains to the degree I found satisfactory. Now, first let me say that the fifty set arm workout I did which produced so much gains, was the exception not the rule, my general problem was that high volume training was preventing me from recovering adequately to make positive muscular gains from my workouts. My arms however did respond to a mega volume workout done once because I used that workout to totally shock that area to immediate change through overwhelming stimuli. I used shock training from time to time when I believed overwhelming stimuli would create immediate change. But again the general problem I had was overtraining. My extensive reading and study led to me finding a solution to my problem: a solution so effective that eventually I would be able to become one of the most massive symmetrical bodybuilders that walked the earth in the early nineties. I used to stay at my aunt’s house some weekends when I was in college the first year. I came across a large collection of bodybuilding books and magazines my cousin had, these were ten years old and had in the workouts and training philosophy of a man whose system transformed me from someone who would have never entered a contest, to someone who grew and grew, and grew on his unique philosophy. I came across the writings of Mike Mentzer. His system worked for me like no other. My business and personal training system workouts which produce better results for my clients than any of the competition were formed by a melding of my ideas and experience and his. Now twenty five years later many, many of my personal training Fort Lauderdale clients have profited because of the excellence of the system which has come forth.
